WHY ASK?
There are an estimated 54 million people in the United States living with some form of disability. The disabled community is the largest minority group in the country. The numbers add up to nearly one in five people. Of this number, nearly eight million are children living with mental and/or physical disabilities.
The lives of children living with disabilities can include intense mental, emotional, and physical challenges. These children generally have little access to opportunities routinely enjoyed by other children. The saddest fact of all is that the majority of children living with a disability feel a pronounced sense of isolation. This isolation is not limited to the inevitable confinement to their home. As we have discovered, being treated differently is the act that creates the divide between those with disabilities and those who are able-bodied.
Sports and recreation is a way to recognized, to integrate, and to bridge the gap between children with disabilities and those without. Adaptive Adventures has witnessed how participation in outdoor activities and team sports can relieve and overcome the feeling of isolation in a child's life.
Adaptive Adventures started the Adaptive Sports for Kids (ASK) program in 2001 to address the needs of disabled children. Since inception, our kids programs have been the fastest growing part of Adaptive Adventures. We have created summer and winter camps, gone to schools, worked with like-minded organizations...all to help these kids. Why have we grown in this direction? Just ASK yourself and you will see the answer.
